How to Get His Love and Attention

Ah, Valentine’s Day… A day when some single people envy married couples, some married couples envy single people, and everyone else is just waiting for the chocolate to go on sale.

It’s also a day when a person who has a crush on someone hopes they’ll finally get lucky. Maybe the person they have a crush on will tell them they feel the same way, or at least look their way. But at the end of the day, they’re still alone.

A day that seems to put salt on a brokenhearted person’s fresh wounds, and open the floodgates of painful memories.

And a day when happy couples might have misunderstandings or unmet expectations regarding gifts and plans, and things might go sour for a bit.

A day when a couple whose relationship is falling apart, hopes that the romantic atmosphere and expressions of love might pull things back together. But the day comes and goes, and here they are again.

A day that a person celebrated for the last 50 years with their loved one… But this year, they will be alone, with only that person’s memories to keep them company.

Romantic love can be a beautiful thing, but it still has so much room for misunderstandings, ingratitude, cruelty, and loss. Because one person can never totally fulfill another, in every single way. They can’t meet every expectation, all the time. They can’t give them attention 24/7. Sometimes, they don’t even want to.

And then there’s God

Remember Me; I will remember you. (Quran 2:152)

Whenever My servants ask you about Me — no doubt,  I am near. I respond to the call of the one calling out whenever he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me so that they may be [rightly] guided. (Quran 2:186)

My servant does not draw near to Me with anything more beloved to Me than the religious duties I have obligated upon him. And My servant continues to draw near to me with extra acts of worship until I love him… [Then] were he to ask [something] of Me, I would surely give it to him; and were he to seek refuge with Me, I would surely grant him refuge. (Narrated in Sahih Bukhari)

I am near to the thought of My servant as he thinks about Me, and I am with him as he remembers Me. And if he remembers Me in his heart, I also remember him within Myself. And if he remembers Me in a gathering, I remember him in a greater gathering.  If he draws near Me by a hand-span, I draw near him by an arm’s length. And if he draws near Me by an arm’s length, I draw near him by the space (covered by) two arms. And if he walks towards Me, I rush towards him. (Narrated in Sahih Muslim)

Seek a love which is always reciprocated, and goes way beyond your expectations. A love that appreciates and grows from your every effort. And a love that doesn’t falter or die. A love that will never break your heart.

Truly, this can only be found in Divine Love, no matter how hard we might try to find it in a human being.

Reach out to God. Love Him with all you’ve got. Seek His love and attention, and what you receive in return will ensure that you’re never empty or alone again. Because His love is unmatched in this world.
