Journey Through the Quran – God’s Original Forgiveness

In this first episode of the “Ramadan Segments, Going through the Quran”, I will look at the second chapter, the 37th verse where it says:

Adam received words from his Lord and he turned back to Him. He is Oft Forgiving and He is Merciful. (Quran 2:37)

This verse refers to the incident when Adam is said to have eaten from the tree and then God confronted him about this and he wanted, obviously, to be forgiven by God for his sin and God taught him the words which he was to recite and by which he would seek the forgiveness of God.

Original Forgiveness

What is important in this passage is that it says that God forgave Adam and He is forgiving; He is Merciful.

Since that God is forgiving, in a way in Arabic, which means that He does it again and again, He forgives again and again.

It is significant that in this story, we don’t have a mention of original sin, but we have a story of original forgiveness.

So God forgave Adam. And in this we have the lesson that when we mess up, when we commit sins, God is willing to forgive us as well.

And so what we need to do is not to look for another savior to save us from the wrath of God, but rather we need to repent before God and ask for His forgiveness and His guidance.

We ask you o Allah to forgive us for our mistakes, remedy our shortcomings, and guide us to live in a way that is pleasing to you starting this very month of Ramadan on this very day.
