No Prophet was misunderstood by his followers like was Jesus. Much disputes and disagreements held by Christians about Jesus (peace be upon him). Some consider him a Son of God, others believe him as divine and God himself.
However, Islam gave a clear understanding of the personality of Jesus, son of Mary.
In many parts of the Quran, God tells the story of Jesus from his birth till when He raised his soul. The Quran came to confirm some of what is revealed about Jesus in the Bible and to clear and correct what was corrupted and refute the false ideas about Jesus.
For example God says in the Quran:
That is Jesus, the son of Mary – the word of truth about which they are in dispute. (19:34)
It is not [befitting] for Allah to take a son; exalted is He! When He decrees an affair, He only says to it, “Be,” and it is. (19:35)
Jesus spoke in the Quran. He spoke words of truth and wisdom. Let’s see five truths Jesus himself said in the Quran.
1- He is the Humble Servant of God
Jesus clearly said that he had come with a mission: to teach the laws of God.
[Jesus] said, “Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet. (19:30)
And He has made me blessed wherever I am and has enjoined upon me prayer and zakah as long as I remain alive. (19:31)
And [made me] dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me a wretched tyrant. (19:32)
2- He Worships God Alone
[Jesus said], “And indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is a straight path.” (19:36)
And when Jesus brought clear proofs, he said, “I have come to you with wisdom and to make clear to you some of that over which you differ, so fear Allah and obey me. (43:63)
3- He Performs Miracles with the Permission of God
Unlike other Prophets, Jesus’ birth was a miracle in itself. The Quran mentions Jesus to perform many miracles by the Will of God that no other Prophet could do.
And [make him] a messenger to the Children of Israel, [who will say], ‘Indeed I have come to you with a sign from your Lord in that I design for you from clay [that which is] like the form of a bird, then I breathe into it and it becomes a bird by permission of Allah. And I cure the blind and the leper, and I give life to the dead – by permission of Allah. And I inform you of what you eat and what you store in your houses. Indeed in that is a sign for you, if you are believers.
4- He Will Come Back to Earth in the End of Times
Jesus will certainly return. He will return to confirm the true beliefs and spread justice, as the Quran confirms.
And peace is on me the day I was born and the day I will die and the day I am raised alive.” (19:33)
5- He is Not Divine
God attributed some special qualities in Jesus, that many people think of him as God or Son of God. And in the Day of Judgment, Jesus will Stand before God and God will question him about what his people used to believe in him:
And [beware the Day] when Allah will say, “O Jesus, Son of Mary, did you say to the people, ‘Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah?'”
He will reply with the words of truth:
He will say, “Exalted are You! It was not for me to say that to which I have no right. If I had said it, You would have known it. You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself. Indeed, it is You who is Knower of the unseen.
I said not to them except what You commanded me – to worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord. And I was a witness over them as long as I was among them; but when You took me up, You were the Observer over them, and You are, over all things, Witness. (5:116-117)
If You should punish them – indeed they are Your servants; but if You forgive them – indeed it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. (5:118)
As Muslims, we follow the Quran in respecting and honoring Jesus, son of Mary. And our faith is not complete if we don’t have a sound belief in Jesus and all other Prophets and messengers of God (peace be upon them).
