Surat An-Nur [The Light] takes its name after its 35th verse (ayah) which reads as follows “Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth….”.
Surah An-Nur was sent down to keep pure and strengthen the moral fibre of the Muslim society. It’s first verse says: “(This is) a Surah (chapter of the Qur’an) which We have sent down and which We have enjoined, (ordained its legal laws) and in it We have revealed manifest Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations lawful and unlawful things, and set boundaries of Islamic Religion), that you may remember.”
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in a tradition has said: “Whoever reads Sura An-Nur (and applies it in his life), for each faithful woman and man who were in the past and will be in the future Allah will give him 10 good acts as reward.”
Surah An-Nur was revealed in Madinah after the 6th year after the Prophet (PBUH) migrated to Madinah. This surah is similar to surahs Al-Baqarah, Al-Ma’idah, etc. because it also contains Islamic laws (Shari’ah) in it that enhances our lives.
In this episode of the program “Reason” of Iqraa TV Channel, the Muslim Egyptian geologist Dr. Zaghlool Al Najjar reveals some of the signs which Allah has mentioned in the ayat of this surah.
