Toronto Mayor John Tory has proclaimed October 2019 as Islamic Heritage Month, encouraging citizens to learn more about Islam and participate in activities hosted by the Muslim community.
“The City of Toronto acknowledges the valued contributions that the Muslim community of Toronto has made to strengthen our society and contribute to our city’s motto “Diversity Our Strength“,” Tory wrote in a proclamation on Toronto government website.
“Diversity strengthens us socially, politically, culturally and economically. And as one of the world’s most multicultural cities, Toronto has become a model city where we respect and protect all religions, faiths, and beliefs.”
Canada celebrates Islamic History Month Canada (IHMC) annually in October to celebrate, inform, educate, and share with fellow Canadians the rich Muslim heritage and contributions to society.
Besides, the mayor stressed the significance of the Muslim heritage in the Canadian society, praising their contributions in the cultural fabric of the city.
“Whereas Islamic Heritage Month provides us an opportunity to learn about the rich Islamic history and culture within our city,” he wrote.
In addition, the mayor wrote, “During Islamic Heritage Month we are reminded of the many contributions that Muslims have made to the economic, political, social and cultural fabric of our city.
“Residents across the city are encouraged to learn more about Islam and to participate in activities throughout the month that celebrate our city’s Muslim community.”
Sharing History
Significantly, IHMC believes that through education and sharing positive stories, all Canadians can grow and connect in the best way possible.
Earlier in 2007, honorable and departed, Mauril Belanger, MP, for Ottawa-Vanier proclaimed IHMC. The cities of Kingston, Burnaby, and most recently in the province of Manitoba also proclaimed the event.
Later on, IHMC became an independent body with a new Chair in 2013. The Board members are currently from Saskatoon, Regina, London, Ottawa, and Winnipeg.
