Students and parents from the South Florida Muslim community gathered Monday afternoon to load up supplies and aid to the survivors of the Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas, 7 News Miami reported.
“The basic faith of our religion tells us that needing — the one in need — is the most important thing,” said Naveed Anjum, vice president of the Islamic School of Miami.
“It is the most important factor of our faith of Islam. That’s what we’re teaching, and that’s what the students feel that is most important.”
Several Muslim organizations, including the Islamic School of Miami, collected over $25,000 worth of relief supplies.
Volunteers loaded the 20-foot shipping container with food, water, and other essentials.

The shipping container, set to arrive in the Bahamas later this week, is not the first of its kind.
In September, several Muslim organizations collected relief items from 21 mosques in South Florida which were sent to the Bahamas.
Hurricane Dorian was the most powerful tropical cyclone on record to strike the Bahamas and is regarded as the worst natural disaster in the country’s history.
It struck Abaco Islands on September 1. The hurricane was the fourth named storm, second hurricane, and the first major hurricane of the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season.
The resultant damage to these islands was catastrophic. It has destroyed most structures, leaving at least 70,000 homeless.
