American Muslim’s Reaction to Mosque Reopening Goes Viral

An American Muslim basketball player couldn’t contain his excitement as mosques reopened in Qatar on June 15, after three months of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Musa Abdul-Aleem, a basketballer at Al Wakrah Club, shared a video of himself happily running toward a mosque in Al Wakrah, while repeatedly yelling, “The Masjid’s open!”

In the video, courtesy of Ilmfeed, he excitedly asks a security guard, “Is that the Iqama?” [the second call to Islamic prayer.]

As Qatar eased its COVID-19 restrictions on June 15, 500 mosques opened their doors for prayers (except for Friday prayers).

Since the outbreak of the new coronavirus pandemic, countries around the world have taken drastic measures to halt its spread.

Measures included the closure of the Holy Mosques in Makkah and Madinah and suspension of Umrah.

Last month, worshippers returned to the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah and 90,000 across Saudi Arabia after 70 days of shutdown.

Mosques in Makkah, including the Grand Mosque, remained shut in line with a plan to gradually return to normal life.
