LONDON – Liverpool’s Muslim star Mohamed Salah was targeted by racist anti-Muslim chants during his team’s game against West Ham on Monday, BBC reported Wednesday.

In a statement, West Ham said they have “a zero tolerance policy to any form of violent or abusive behavior.”

It continued: “We are an inclusive football club. Anyone identified committing an offense will have their details passed to the police and will face a lifetime ban from London Stadium.

“There is no place for this kind of behavior at our stadium.”

The abuse targeting Liverpool Muslim star was filmed on a mobile phone in the West Ham section of the London Stadium.

A video that went online showed a fan shouting “Salah you f*** Muslim” as he took a corner during the Premier League 1-1 draw.

But it is unclear who was making the calls at the 26-year-old Egyptian star.

The user who posted the video on Twitter said: “I was disgusted by what I was hearing. People like this deserve no place in our society let alone football matches.”

Salah is arguably one of the biggest Muslim sports stars in the world at present.

Hailing from a Muslim-majority country, Salah is a devout person who often prostrates to God on the field after scoring goals – a trend in sports that Egyptian players have started since 2006 during the African Cup of Nations in Egypt- hence nicknamed the ‘Prostrating Pharaohs’.

Salah’s record-breaking exploits for Liverpool have earned him millions of adoring fans.

Salah scored 44 goals in 52 appearances in all competitions last season while helping Liverpool surge through the Champions League knockout stages while securing a fourth-place EPL finish.

A recent report by Football Against Racism in Europe (Fare) found that the success of Liverpool Muslim star Mohamed Salah has significantly decreased hate and race crimes in the English Premier League.
