UK Homeless Find Warmth in Mosques

Thanks to a new initiative led by a group of British Muslim organizations, Birmingham homeless and rough sleepers found warmth and food in cold weather this week.

The “Our Masjids with the Homeless” is led by a group of Muslim organizations in Birmingham. The groups include As-Suffa Institute, Masjid Al Falaah, and the Great Barr Muslim Foundation.

Different mosques have already started welcoming the homeless to their shelters during the winter season.

For example, the Green Lane Masjid and Community Centre (GLMCC) in Birmingham, opened its doors to shelter homeless earlier this week.

“We are overseeing the winter night shelter for rough-sleepers tonight as part of the “Masjids with the Homeless” project,” the Great Barr Muslim Foundation wrote on Facebook yesterday.

“Whilst it’s normality for us to have beds to sleep on every night, there are many vulnerable men & women in our city for whom it is seen as a luxury to have a good nights’ rest in a safe environment on comfortable, clean and warm beds.”

Muslims have been leading efforts to help the needy and homeless this winter season, and this has been so highly commendable, especially during cold nights.

The oldest mosque in Canada also opened its doors last Thursday night to rough sleepers and homeless people.
