“The mosque will serve as a cultural bridge fostering greater understanding between communities and have a strong educational component, providing an infrastructure and support for learning and research,” the mission statement announced.
The new mosque, which can hold as much as 1,000 worshippers, is the first purpose-built mosque in Cambridge and is dedicated to the spiritual and social welfare of the city’s estimated six thousand Muslims.
“As a major international city, Cambridge deserves a proper facility for Muslims which will enhance its prestige and provide an architectural focus attracting new visitors,” the project’s website said.
“Reflecting Islam’s contribution to contemporary debates over sustainability, the mosque will incorporate significant design features which will minimize carbon emission and emphasize the role of faith in promoting responsible management of the earth’s resources,” the website mentioned.
It’s expected that the mosque will be handed over to the Muslim community in November 2019. There will be no minaret and no call to prayer broadcast outside the building.
The new building will incorporate up to 80 parking spaces and designated space for 140 bicycles. There will be a café, teaching area and meeting rooms for use by the local Muslim and non-Muslim communities.
Estimates in 2009 suggested a total of about 2.4 million Muslims over all the UK. According to the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, the number of Muslims in Britain could now be around 3 million.
