LONDON – A young British Muslim has challenged the stereotypes attached to Muslim women in a powerful TED Talk.
In her talk, performed last November, Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan cited the burqini ban and honor crimes as two of the many examples that illustrate the way people usually discuss Muslim women.
“The feedback I received was interesting,” Suhaiymah told My Salaam on Thursday.
“Many people in the audience came up to me to tell me that they had found my talk one of the most challenging of the day because it really asked them to reconsider things they had previously assumed,” she said.
“I remember one woman said it made her actually very uncomfortable, and I was grateful she had told me so because that is always my aim: to expose assumptions to people’s own selves and to disrupt and destabilize certainties.”
