A Muslim woman has been hailed as “incredibly brave” as she stepped in to confront a man over his anti-Semitic rant at a Jewish father and son on the London underground, The Independent reported.
“Behold I will make them come and worship before your feet,” a man who appeared to be reading the Bible said in the video, quoting from a passage in the Book of Revelation that refers to people falsely claiming to be Jewish.
The Muslim woman could be heard telling the man “come on there are children here” after interrupting him while he was reading an offensive Bible passage.
But the Bible-carrying man, in black gloves, gestures to the family, telling her: “These people are impostors, trying to claim my heritage and they’re trying to tell me that’s cool,” and also mentions the slave trade.
When she tries to reason with him, he says: “It’s not my opinion, it’s God’s word.” He also mentions 9/11 to her.
Social media users heaped praise on the woman, one saying “give her a medal”, another saying she was a star, others lauding her courage.
“That lady is incredibly brave standing up to him like that. He acted very threatening and she kept her cool brilliantly,” one wrote on Twitter.
“A Muslim lady going to the defense of a Jewish father and son gives me renewed hope for the future of this wonderful country of ours. Let’s try and find out who she is so we can thank her for her wonderful courage and support,” another added.
“Fair play to the Muslim lady for sticking up for that Jewish family,” a third added.
Chris Atkins, who filmed the rant, asked anyone who recognized the man to report him to police, adding: “The woman who intervened was Muslim, and she was incredibly brave.”
The vast majority of Muslims in the United Kingdom live in England: 2,660,116 (5.02% of the population). 76,737 Muslims live in Scotland (1.45%), 45,950 in Wales (1.50%). London has the greatest population of Muslims in the country.
According to the 2011 census, 263,346 people answered “Jewish” to the voluntary question on religion, compared with 259,927 in the previous count of 2001.
