PARIS – A new study conducted by the Institut Français d’Opinion Publique (IFOP) found that 56% of French people believe Islam is compatible with the values of their society.

The survey of IFOP and Journal de Dimanche also asked the French people what they thought about creating a tax on halal products, the revenues of which would be used to finance Muslim worship in France. The result showed that 70% oppose the idea, The Local reported on Monday.

The official research also exhibited that the more left-wing the voter, the more likely they were to consider Islam compatible with the French values.

In total, 73% of people who supported France’s Socialist party believed Islam to be compatible as did 60% of those who supported left-wing party “La France Insoumise” (France Unbowed).

Furthermore, 58% of people who supported Macron’s Republique en Marche party thought the same.

At the other end of the political spectrum, among those who support the right-wing Les Republicains party, 63% think Islam is incompatible with French society’s values. Somewhat surprisingly, National Front voters were slightly less likely to think the same, yet their figure was still high with 62%.

The survey comes as French President Emmanuel Macron proposed restructuring Islam in France.

“I want to reorganize Islam in France to better integrate worship, fight fundamentalism and preserve national cohesion,” said Macron in an interview with Le Journal de Dimanche about his vision for the role of Islam in the French society.

In September 2017, a comparative study that looked at how French Muslims felt about France showed that they feel a stronger attachment to France than Muslims of other European countries, despite experiencing high levels of discrimination in the western European nation.

That survey also found that first generation French Muslims feel more attached to France than their offspring.
