The photo ultimately went viral after Twitter user @mohdahmedmemon shared it on the social media platform.
“Today in Makkah a wife hides her husband from sun. One of the most beautiful images recently taken,” he wrote.
His tweet, which was shared publicly on Sept. 3, has received over 28,000 re-tweets and over 22,000 favorites at the time of writing.
The man in the photom called Fahad Iqbal, is said to be a Rohingya Muslim as well as his wife.
The situation for Rohingya Muslims in very much different at home, where they face discrimination and abuse.
Described by the UN as one of the world’s most persecuted minorities, Burma’s ethnic-Bengali Muslims, generally known as the Rohingyas, are facing a catalog of discrimination in their homeland.
They have been denied citizenship rights since an amendment to the citizenship laws in 1982 and are treated as illegal immigrants.
Burma’s government as well as the Buddhist majority refuse to recognize the term “Rohingya,” referring to them as “Bengalis.”
The photo is not the only hajj photo that went viral on the internet this year.
Another photo showing a man holding an umbrella to shield his wife from sun in the haram was also very popular on the internet and social media.
