PAHANG – Rising above obstacles, a disabled couple from Kuantan municipality in Pahang, Malaysia, has worked hard by selling tissues for 16 years to earn the chance of performing hajj to Makkah.
“We feel so blessed that our earnings from selling tissues and the generous donations from concern citizens have abled us to support our expenses to Mecca and completing our fifth pillar of Islam,” Rohani Noh told Malaysian Digest on Thursday, August 10.
“Our hard work of saving the money for 16 years has paid off. All of my prayers are both heard and granted. For this, I am so grateful and excited to become a guest in the holy land,” the grandmother of 21 children said.
Noh, 65, and her husband Mohd Kenali Aziz, 80 worked everyday for the past 16 years at a farmer’s market in Kuantan selling tissues.
After waiting so long for all these years, the two have finally earned enough money from selling tissues and will be going to Makkah for hajj this year.
The elderly couple also had to get involved in some music performances to make extra money so they could earn more for their savings.
“We’ve been performing at the night market and the farmer’s market for 16 years now and our main aim has always been to save money for Hajj,” she added.
The couple will be accompanied during the blessed journey by their two children, Sayana, 42, and Ani Sharil, 44.
Muslims from around the world pour into Makkah every year to perform hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam.
Hajj consists of several rituals, which are meant to symbolize the essential concepts of the Islamic faith, and to commemorate the trials of Prophet Abraham and his family, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon them.
Every able-bodied adult Muslim who can financially afford the trip must perform hajj at least once in a lifetime.
Hajj is officially expected to fall this year between August 30 and September 4, with the climax falling on August 31 when the faithful descend the Mount `Arafat.
