Severe Illnesses, Crucial Tests or Calamities?

When we face  severe illnesses, how should we see it? Are they crucial tests or calamities?

Most of us will have to face sicknesses of all kinds, it is the painful reality.

In Islam we are asked to be patient and not to blame our Creator when our health is degrading.

Because indeed, behind every calamity there is a test from Allah.

“And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.

Who, when disaster strikes them, say, “Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.

Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided.” [Surah Al-Baqara 155-157]

This video is a lecture from Mufti Menk who explains a touching story of a female companion of the Prophet (pbuh). She was promised paradise because of her long lasting illness and devotion.

When Allah (swt) loves a worshipper, He tests him.’

Here is the complete hadith about the woman who suffered epilepsy and would become uncovered (during the seizure) it was narrated by al-Bukhaari and Muslim as well:

It was narrated that ‘Ata’ ibn Abi Rabaah said: Ibn ‘Abbaas said to me: Shall I show you a woman of the people of Paradise? I said: Yes. He said: This black woman came to the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and said: I have epilepsy and I become uncovered. Pray to Allah for me.

He said: “If you wish, you may be patient, and Paradise will be yours, or if you wish, I will pray to Allah to heal you.”

She said: I will be patient. She said: But I become uncovered; pray to Allah that I will not become uncovered. So he prayed for her.

[Al-Bukhari (5652) and Muslim (2576).]

This amazing woman had shown so much patience, resilience and devotion that knowing about her story for the first time is a tearful moment. She chose paradise over this dunia and she still asked to be helped to remain covered if she would faint. MashaAllah…

May Allah give hope in the hearts of his creations for they are being tested with heavy burden, ameen.

“If Allah wants to do good to somebody, He afflicts him with trials.” [Sahih Bukhari Volume 7, Book 70, Number 548]
