Rufayda Al-Aslamiya – The First Muslim Nurse

We have all heard of Florence Nightingale and how she cared for the wounded soldiers in the Crimean war. But let’s go back in time even further. Let’s look at the first Muslim nurse, Rufayda Al-Aslamiya.

Rufayda was one of the first people from Madinah to accept Islam! She was among the first to witness the Prophet (PBUH) return from Hijrah.

Rufayda’s family has strong ties with the medical community. Her father was a physician and he played a role in Rufayda’s emergence as an expert practising nurse.

She was given permission to erect a tent inside the Prophet’s (PBUH) mosque in Madinah to provide nursing care and train Muslim women and girls to become nurses.
