The great companion Umar ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, has an interesting story on how love changed his heart.

One day, he came and sat in front of the Prophet, peace be upon him, and being very truthful he said to him he loved him more than anything in this world except for his own self.

But the Prophet, peace be upon him, wanting to take him up to the highest spiritual level, how did he, peace be upon him, respond?

He said, “no Umar, your faith is not complete until you love me more than your love for yourself.”

These words entered his heart, and they had such a deep impact on Umar that before he got up, his heart took another spiritual station, and he looked at the Prophet and said:

“O Messenger of God, I love you more than I love my own self.”

This is how love changed his heart, in a matter of a few minutes.

May Allah (SWT) gift us all with a deep love for the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.
