How to Fix a Spiritual Crisis?

What do you do when you have a spiritual crisis?

Allah (SWT) gives the example of the tree, in order to teach us about the importance of Iman, and specifically of Tawheed, “la ilaha illa Allah.”

The reason is that the very first thing that we have to do to take care of our heart, is very similar to taking care of our body.

Now everyone in this hall knows how to take care of their body.

In fact, I could get a child up here and ask them how do you take care of your body, and they can tell me these things:

Well first you need oxygen. You need to breathe in order to stay alive.

For your body to stay alive you need oxygen.

And everyone in this hall knows that if you are deprived of oxygen, you will only be able to survive for a short amount of time, and then you will die.

Agreed?

Now the heart also needs oxygen, and it’s interesting because the trees, what do they give us?

They give us oxygen.

And in fact, Allah (SWT) actually made this connection with the tree and the goodly word:

Have you not considered how Allah presents an example, [making] a good word like a good tree, whose root is firmly fixed and its branches [high] in the sky?” (Qur’an, 14:24)

This good word is Iman and La ilaha illa Allah, and ultimately the oxygen of the heart is Dhikr Allah, the remembrance of Allah (SWT).

If we live our lives and we don’t remember Allah, if we live our day and we go through our day and we are not praying, it is exactly like a person who is being deprived of oxygen…
