In times where food is being wasted while many people in the world are starving, this reminder, is inviting us to ponder about a great sin in Islam: greed.
“[…] Be happy and be hopeful of that which gives you delight. By Allah, it is not the poverty about which I fear in regard to you but I am afraid in your case that (the worldly) riches may be given to you as were given to those who had gone before you and you begin to compete with one another for them as they competed for them, and these may destroy you as these destroyed them.” (Ref.: Sahih Muslim 2961)
As History has taught us, greed is the foundation of corruption.
Wars, conflicts, betrayal, destruction of the natural environment, enslavement of the populations, impoverishment of those who are already in need, all have their source in human greed for money and power.
Despite ego-centered life being largely promoted nowadays, Islam‘s values are urging us to repress our selfishness. In order to help humans and their environment to prosper, we are asked to share our wealth for the sake of Allah.
Being different from those who refused to help the poor stating that Allah would have granted them enough if He wanted to. Reflect upon the Prophet’s (pbuh) teachings so that you find peace and joy when giving to others.
In the end, you have to think about the big picture and understand that Allah has asked us to pay our zakah. Hence it is our duty to stay generous and push for a more ethical world.
