Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was gentle to people who were often doing haram things. Take alcohol for example, it took many years before the complete halt of alcohol because the wisdom is that if you stop someone from drinking and make them pray straight away, they are going to tun away from Islam. These things have to be done gently and with ease.
