Session is over.

Assalamu Alaikum, I heard that drinking milk is a blessing. What reward will I get if I drink a lot of milk? Jazakallah.

Wa Alaykum Assalam and thank you for your question.

The worldly reward is good health if you follow a balanced diet at the same time. Milk contains protein for your muscles and calcium for your bones as well as many other health benefits that are only found in milk; especially fresh milk, not pasteurized.

Concerning reward in the hereafter, we read in the hadith that the Prophet (peace be upon him) liked drinking milk; therefore, if you do so intending to follow the Prophet’s sunnah then you will be rewarded accordingly.

However, there is no mention in any authentic Islamic sources what is the reward for drinking milk. There is, however, for offering milk to others:

Abu Huraira reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) forbade (to do certain things) and then he made a mention of certain habits and said:

He who gives a she-camel as a gift, for him is the reward (of the gift) both morning and evening – a reward for drinking milk in the morning and a reward for drinking milk in the evening. (Sahih Muslim)
In another hadith, Al-Bara bin Azib narrated that the Messenger of Allah said:
“Whoever gives someone some milk or silver, or guides him through a strait, then he will have the reward similar to freeing a slave.” (At-Tirmidhi – Sahih)

I hope this helps answer your question.

Salam and please keep in touch.

Assalamu Alaikum, in this hadith, it says that the Prophet (peace be upon him) allowed Dihya, a companion, to pick any slave girl of his choice. He then picked chief of the tribes called "Safiya bint Huyai". After, the Prophet decided that he will take the slave girl and for him (Dihya) to pick somebody else after another companion told the Prophet (peace be upon him) about her status. He then manumitted and married her. [Sahih Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 8, Number 367]. My question is, why did she have to become a Muslim in order to marry the Prophet (peace be upon him), when she was a Jew (I think)? Or was she a Jew when she married the Prophet (peace be upon him)? Also, the hadith says that the manumission was the mahr (dowry?). So, does this mean, if she was to get separated, she would be re-enslaved? Jazakallah.

Wa Alaykum Assalam and thank you for your questions.

Women captives were given the choice to accept Islam in order to be manumitted or remain on their religions and stay “captives of right hand possessions”.

When they accepted Islam, the companions, and in this case the Prophet (peace be upon him), married them. So they became their wives and no longer captives.

Her manumission was her dowry because it is a joyful occasion for her; it is something that she was pleased with; a token that replaces material things. She was more in need of that then gold and silver since she regained her honor and status.

Safiya bint Huyai was a Jew but became a Muslim by choice.

I hope this helps answer your questions.

Salam and please keep in touch.

Assalamu Alaikum, in the old times, slavery was a quite common and normal phenomenon. I just want to authenticate some hadiths relating to this. These following hadiths say that it is permissible to have intercourse with the captives, even if they had a husband before (which is what everybody else use to do): "http://www.sunnah.com/search/polythiest-husband-captive-intercourse". The following hadith is about a slave being killed because he ran away: "http://www.sun nah.com/nasai/3 7/85". In general, is it true that killing a slave is a big sin, but there is no retaliation in the Shariah for it? Also, is this applicable in today's time? Is it permissible for a Muslim leader to enslave his enemies' country if there was a legitimate war? Jazakallah.

Wa Alaykum Assalam and thank you for your questions.

Obviously, slavery issues are no longer applicable at our time. Currently, Muslims may not enslave anyone because slavery has been abolished; not even enemies captured during wars.

The first hadith you referenced, captives of war are women of the enemy combatants; it is not surprising that they were already married but heir husbands died in war. So when Muslims, defeated the enemy at that time, the men were either killed or made prisoners of war, while the women were taken as captives and distributed among the men to take care of them.

Allah allowed the Muslims to sleep with those ladies, mainly to avoid any social corruption such as prostitution if left without supervision.

On the other hand, we must put things into perspective that in our modern civilized world, whenever Muslims were subjected to war such as in Bosnia and Iraq, thousands of Muslim girls and women were raped.

During the Bosnian war in the early nineties, more than fifty thousand Muslim ladies were imprisoned and raped. The count in Iraq is unknown but the same treatment was shown to Muslim women.

I challenge anyone to bring proofs throughout history that Muslims mistreated women during wars.

As for the second hadith, we don’t have further details regarding the reasons why Jarir killed his slave. It appears that he only did so because the slave ran away; there could have been other reasons.

I hope this helps answer your questions.
