Domestic Violence: What Should the Victim Do?

Domestic violence is any behavior that aims at gaining power and control over a spouse, partner or family member.

Abuse is a learned behavior; it is not caused by anger, mental problems, drugs or alcohol, or other common excuses. Unfortunately, it has become a global problem.

Domestic violence can affect anyone of any age or gender. Whether it’s physical or psychological, domestic abuse is destructive for both the battered and the batterer.

Its tendency to be passed down over generations makes it very important that we develop effective methods for combating abuse.

A survivor of domestic violence may have to live with anxiety, depression, emotional detachment, low self-esteem, sleep disturbances, and fear of intimacy.

So, how should we as Muslims deal with this issue? What can we learn from the Prophet’s example concerning this global problem?
