This Montreal Muslim woman is making sure no one in her community goes hungry, no matter their beliefs.
70-year-old Sabariah Hussein, who was born in Malaysia, cooks for up to 300 people a day on stoves in her apartment. A team of volunteers helps her feed the homeless, refugees, or anyone who needs a hot meal.
She has devoted her life to helping others, placing their needs before hers. It’s a full-time job – and she doesn’t even get paid for it.
“This is the happiness of my life, to see the smiles on people’s faces,” she told CTV News. “Never mind religion or race, I’m there for them.”
Sabariah grew up in Johor Bahru in Malaysia but moved to Canada 30 years ago. She’s since drawn a team of volunteers from across Montreal to help her cook. She attributed her acts of culinary compassion to her mother, who would cook for up to 1,000 people, free of charge.
Outside cooking, Hussein also helps run a women’s shelter in Montreal called Our Second Home. Her charitable spirit landed her the chance to meet Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Sabariah also works closely with River’s Edge Community Church and Unity Church, as well as five other mosques in the area, proving that race and religion are no barrier to feeding the unfortunate.
She wishes to set up an organisation to “help the needy, the homeless, the ones that really need help,” and hopes to see more youth taking part in such initiatives.
