“My name is Sati Rukiye Demirel. I am a Turkish but was born and live in Germany. ?? . I did Taekwondo for over 13 years and got my 2nd degree dan. Now I am a referee. Initially, it was a big problem being a Taekwondo referee with hijab. However, after winning fights, it’s no longer an issue. . I did Kyokushinkai Karate for 5 years and I am a fighter for Germany. I got my 1st degree Dan in Kyokushinkai Karate. I won so many tournaments with my hijab. So I am free in my hijab and do everything what I want. I do Kickboxing too. I like helping others achieve their goals in sports. . “When I started wearing the hijab at 10 years old, it wasn't all rainbows and butterflies. I got sarcastic comments from my friends and my relatives who think hijab is a sign of backwardness. They started telling me that I could not achieve anything in my life. I was prompted to cover my hair at the encouragement of my father, who said that he would be very proud of me if I did. I loved making my parents proud. When I entered into college, I was the only girl who was practicing hijab. I got bullied by several classmates; they often teased me in a mean way that I cover myself because I catch cold as I am sick. As I’ve grown older, my relationship with my hijab has changed. I started wearing it to make my parents proud, but it has since developed into an act that's far more special and divine. As time has passed, I started getting respect for my hijab.
