Tomorrow I’ll be flying into LA to work with one of my fave clients. It’s also my first modeling gig of 2020. And, I hope the first of many more companies using unconventional models to represent their brands. Because representation matters. Periodt. We need to see ourselves in ads! Straight size white and racially ambiguous girls aren’t the only folks we want to see living their best lives. Other??forms??of??beauty??exist?? Yesterday, I was on YouTube and saw a commercial ad pop up with me in it. “That’s you right there,” I told myself. “You are the only fat, Black and visibly Muslim girl in ads right now.” Can you believe it? I’m still in awe that I’ve gotten to work with national and international brands. With all of my clothes on. With my hijab. With my loudness on the inanets ? I get to be me still. It’s funny because I went on a casting for Sephora and Bobbi Brown and didn’t land either one. Usually, I’d be mad. Wonder what’s wrong me? Am I not good enough? Wonder what’s wrong with the higher ups. Why wouldn’t they want to be ahead of the curve of inclusivity? It’s ok, because I’m going to land a huge makeup campaign. I’m going to be on somebody’s billboard in Times Square, maybe even abroad. In the meantime, I’m going to practice patience and manifesting. Also while in LA, I’ll be doing a much needed mental reset. I plan on eating good food, visiting bookstores, doing new things. I’ll also be—for the first time—hiking ? Even though my knees have been acting up, I want to challenge myself. And, I’m going tooooo DISNEYLAND, too!!! Y’all don’t know how excited I am. *Tongue pop What are some cool places to eat, visit, or do when I’m in LA? And Disneyland recommendations? Which fat-friendly mountains/trails do you suggest for a first timer? And, hiking tips are welcome.
