Who Should Pay Zakat Al-Fitr and Who Is Eligible to Receive It?

22 May, 2020
Q As Ramadan wraps up , the question about Zakat Al-Fitr arises. Muslims live all over the world. How do we know when someone is eligible to receive Zakat? What are the requirements? And what is the wisdom behind this kind of charity?

Answer

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu waRahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this Fatwa:

1- The Maliki scholars hold that Zakat al-Fitr is restricted only for the poor and the needy.

2- The majority of scholars maintain that it can be given to all the 8 categories entitled to receive the general Zakah.

3- The head of the household is responsible for paying Zakat al-Fitr on behalf of his dependents.

4- You do not need to pay Zakat al-Fitr on behalf of an embryo.

There are various benefits achieved through Zakat al-Fitr (see details in the video below)
