Q How should Muslims in the West celebrate Prophet Muhammad's birthday?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

Muslims in North America, Europe, and other Western countries should seize the occasions of Islamic events such as Ramadan, Eids, and Prophet Muhammad’s birthday to raise awareness about Islam, Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him), and Islamic noble values and morals.

Answering your question, Dr. Wael Shehab, PhD in Islamic Studies from Al-Azhar University and currently the Imam of the Downtown Toronto Masjid in Canada, states:

I do believe that Muslims in North America, Europe, and other Western countries should seize the occasions of Islamic events to raise awareness about Islam, Prophet Muhammad, and Islamic noble values and morals.

Islamic centers in the West may hold programs to introduce the Prophet’s morals and manners to the Muslim and other communities.

Imams and scholars may focus on studying and teaching the Seerah of Prophet Muhammad. Special programs to raise awareness about Prophet Muhammad may be held too.

Families should do their best to raise their children on loving Prophet Muhammad and following his Sunnah.

On Prophet Muhammad’s birthday occasion, parents may do some programs at home to introduce Prophet Muhammad to their children  through interesting means.

Muslim communities in the West should seize these occasions to come closer and work together for the public benefit of their communities and societies at large.

Finally, diverse ways of showing and celebrating love of Prophet Muhammad should never divide Muslim communities; this rather should bring them closer.

Imams and scholars should always educate their communities and lead them to truly love the Prophet (peace be on him) and live the Sunnah.

Allah Almighty knows best.
