Woman Performing Hajj on Behalf of Uncle: Permissible?

07 August, 2019
Q As-salamu `alaykum. Can a woman go to Hajj on behalf of a deceased man? Or, more precisely, can my female cousin, who already went to Hajj many times, go to Hajj on behalf of my deceased father? My father is her uncle from her father's side. She was doing `Umrah when my father passed away. She even did `Umrah for him before he was laid to rest. Please let me know. Thanks.

Answer

Wa`alaykum as-salam warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

There is nothing wrong with your female cousin’s Hajj on behalf of your late father. As long as she performed her obligatory Hajj, she can perform Hajj on behalf of your father.

In his response to your question, eminent Muslim scholar and da`iyah Sheikh `Abdul Khaliq Hassan Ash-Shareef stated:

Yes, your female cousin can perform Hajj on behalf of your deceased father (may Allah have mercy on him and grant him Paradise).

As for her performance of Umrah on his behalf, this Umrah is acceptable Thus, your father will receive the reward of the Umrah and your cousin will gain a similar reward that does not reduce your father’s reward.

Allah Almighty knows best.
