Can I Have Sex With Menstruating Wife With a Condom?

03 February, 2020
Q Dear scholars, As-Salamu `alaykum. Is it allowed for couples to have sex using a condom during the wife’s menstrual period, if it is agreeable to both? Jazakum Allah khayran.

Answer

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

Men are not allowed to engage in sexual intercourse with their wives during their monthly periods. This interdict from Allah applies only to sexual intercourse, whether with or without a condom.

In his response to the question, Dr. Muzammil H. Siddiqi, Former President of the Islamic Society of North America states:

Women are not unclean during their menstrual periods or post-partum bleeding. They do not have to stay in separate quarters or eat from separate dishes apart from their husbands, as was the case with the ancient Jews. They can retain their normal daily interactions and intimacies with the exception of sexual intercourse.

Sexual intercourse with or without a condom is haram (unlawful) when a woman has her menstrual period. Allah says in the Quran:

They question you (O Muhammad) concerning menstruation. Say: It is an illness, so let women alone at such time and go not in unto them till they are cleansed. And when they have purified themselves, then go in unto them as Allah has enjoined upon you. Truly Allah loves those who turn unto Him, and loves those who have a care for cleanness.” (Al-Baqarah 2:222)

During menses, it is permissible for the couple to be close to each other and enjoy intimacy but there must not be any sexual intercourse.”

Allah Almighty knows best.
