Q Is it permissible to make duaa al-qunut in prayer to stop the spread of Coronavirus?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

It is permissible to offer duaa al-qunut to stop the spread of Coronavirus and for the recovery of those infected with it.

Answering your question about offering duaa al-qunut to keep Coronavirus away, we would like to state the following:

Coronavirus

World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Coronavirus a pandemic. All countries infected with Coronavirus have declared a state of emergency and have taken all necessary precautions to stop the spread of the disease. Some countered have closed schools, cancelled sports events, shut down religious and cultural institutions.

Duaa al-Qunut

Qunut is a supplication offered during prayer at a specific point while standing. It is recommended in Witr prayer after the ruku.

If a calamity befalls the Muslims, it is recommended to say duaa al-qunut after standing up from ruku in the last rakah of each of the five daily obligatory prayers, until Allah relieves the Muslims of that calamity

The Ruling

Since Coronavirus is a calamity that befell the whole world, there is nothing wrong with offering duaa al-Qunut to keep it away from all people; Muslims or non-Muslims.

Since prayers at mosques have been suspended, it is permissible for families who happen to pray together at home to offer duaa al-qunut in the five daily prayers or in Witr prayer, according to scholars who restrict duaa al-qunut to the Witr prayer, to stop the spread of Coronavirus and grant full recovery for infected people.

Almighty Allah knows best.
