My Mother-in-Law Dictates Our Life; I Can’t Tolerate it Any More

12 March, 2020
Q It’s been only 4 months after my marriage. My father in law died before our marriage. My husband is working abroad and I am living with my mother in law alone.

She is always complaining about very small matters to my husband which is not even a problem. The real problem is that she needs everything to be done in her way.

If it’s not done she is complaining. Even though he knows that she is wrong, he simply criticizes me and tells me as the wrongdoer.

I tried explaining the situation, but still he won’t listen. They both are mentally abusing me and not able to be positive anymore. I don’t know what to.

This marriage was done forcefully, but eventually, I became okay with it. Later, because of these problems, I can't tolerate this situation more. My MIL has some mental issues. My husband knows that, but I was not informed before marriage.

Answer

Salam Aleikom,

In this counseling video:

Consult a professional what condition your mother-in-law struggles with.

This will help you how to deal with her.

Maybe your husband is also struggling to know how to deal with his mother.

Talk to your husband about how to improve your situation. Get on the same page with your husband.

Stand up for yourself, but appeal to your husband’s heart. Talk with emotions.
