My Young Son Is Scared of Monkeys

26 October, 2018
Q As-salamu `alaykum. My problem with my son Anas (3 years and 3 months) is that at home he is scared of a monkey. If I tell him to bring something from another room or to go to the bathroom alone he refuses by saying there is a monkey. Many times I take him to the other room and show him that there is no monkey, and sometimes I can hear him telling himself that there is no monkey at home. He is not scared at all outside the house. He leaves his father or me in the street without being scared. Also, he has a lot of nightmares, although I read the Qur’an with him everyday before sleeping. Please help me. Jazaka Allahu khayran.

Wa `alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

From what you are describing, there is nothing major to worry about, as children at this age have a fertile imagination. He may have seen a children’s animation or cartoon on television. These days there are many scary cartoons such as Pokeman and Digemon and even I get scared, yet they are still classified as suitable for children, subhan Allah.

Sometimes, when we want to warn our kids not to do something, we tell them that if they do it, such and such will happen to scare them off. For instance, if we want them to clean their teeth before going to bed, we may tell them that some horrible fairy will come and smell them if they don’t brush their teeth. I am not saying that you did something like this; I am just giving an example.

Another reason could be due to overly protective parents, especially if they have an only child, as such abnormal treatment could make a child feel that something bad might happen.

I would advise you to take him to the zoo and get him to see the monkeys (preferably small ones) in the monkey house. Show him that the normal place for monkeys—and other animals—is the zoo, not his bedroom. If he still says that there is a monkey in his room after you have visited the zoo, just remind him gently that monkeys only live in zoos.

Watch his cartoons with him and answer his questions. Select only peaceful material that is suitable for his age, nothing to disturb his imagination. You can also do this with the stories you read with him. Don’t over protect him. Get him to experiment, but in a controlled manner.

Finally, jazaka Allahu khayran, and may Allah Most High bless you and your child and make him, and all of us, amongst the righteous.

Salam
