Aisha Khaja: Dr. Shabir, the question that we have today is: if Jesus was God before he came to earth, but was not God on earth, but fully human; would this be confirming the Quran?
Dr. Shabir Ally: No, the Quran basically, and very pointedly, insisted there is only One God. And this is the Creator of, the universal God, the fashioner of the heavens and the earth, the Creator of all human beings, and that He’s Only One.
Aisha Khaja: This question is implying that Jesus was god, right?
Dr. Shabir Ally: Yes, the questioner is saying, okay, so Jesus was God, then you know, but in this specific way that he got from all eternity, then he came to earth, and on earth he was just fully human. So, does the Quran actually denied that?
Because there is a common saying among those missionaries who were reaching out to Muslims and trying to say to the Muslims, look you can appreciate our beliefs.
And that there’s a common approach to Muslims, to say to Muslims, well your Quran doesn’t actually deny what specifically we believe. The Quran is denying some kind of Christian groups and their belief, groups that no longer exists today. They are heretical Christian groups and their beliefs, they are considered heretical.
But our beliefs, the Quran does not seem to deny.
But it seems to me that the Quran is very clear that there was only One God. And anything that would be contrary to that claim would be denied implicitly or explicitly by Quran. The Quran is also insisting that Jesus, upon whom be peace, is a servant and messenger of the Almighty God.
And that Jesus, upon whom be peace, is not the son of God. And the Quran does not afford him that title, and in fact, denies that sort of title. And by whatever means, whether by begetting, or adoption, or simply to say that he’s the son of god.
The Quran just doesn’t allow for that title, but says he’s a servant and messenger God, Messiah, God’s prophet, a very important person, but the servant of God.
