Mathematical Proof that the Universe Was Formed Spontaneously!

19 September, 2018
Q I need you to show that a mathematical proof that the universe could have formed spontaneously from nothing is false. So I've been arguing with this Atheist guy about the Big Bang and he proved an evidence that the Big Bang might have come spontaneously. He gave me this link:

Do you have any counter for this?

Answer

Short Answer: Whatever the exact process was that resulted in our existence today, all of the tiniest particles that make up all of us and everything in the universe had to come from somewhere. The laws that govern their behavior likewise came from somewhere; the laws did not create themselves.

Muslims believe that it all came from God, and in the end it will all return to Him to do with as He pleases. For us it is a leap of faith as well, but a leap from a very solid foundation.

Salam Dear Brother,

Thank you for your question and for contacting Ask About Islam.

These “proofs” are all theories. Unless you and your friend are well versed in astrophysics, it is pointless to argue specific theories, which are built on extremely abstract ideas.

This is the domain of scholars whose responsibility it is to take the knowledge they have gained and share it with us in a way that makes sense.

Among scholars of any field, whether secular or religious, there is a back and forth exchange of ideas, challenges, reformulation of theories, new ideas arising from new questions. As a Muslim, I understand that these new ideas come from somewhere as well.

They do not just form in our physical brains as a result of chemical reactions from the food we had for breakfast that day. If a new idea answers more questions than it creates, it is likely to be a fact or have a firm basis in truth.

If it creates more new questions than offer answers, then it may be an exercise in futility chasing this new idea to a satisfactory result.

Ultimately, because we are dealing with such abstract ideas and numbers, we put to our faith in the truth of these theories and the expertise of the scholars who developed them.

It will always be a leap of faith to accept their conclusions as fact or to reject them outright. Muslims accept the study and conclusions of all scholars wherever they agree with or confirm what we know to be true from God and His prophet, peace be upon him.

“And it is We who have built the universe with [Our creative] Power; and, verily, it is We who are steadily expanding it.” [Quran (Az-Zariyaat) 51:47]

Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, was also questioned about the origins of all things,

“’Imran bin Hussain narrated: While I was with the Prophet , some people from Bani Tamim came to him. The Prophet said, “O Bani Tamim! Accept the good news!” They said, “You have given us the good news; now give us (something).” (After a while) some Yemenites entered, and he said to them:Mathematical Proof that the Universe Was Formed Spontaneously

“O the people of Yemen! Accept the good news, as Bani Tamim have refused it. ” They said, “We accept it, for we have come to you to learn the Religion. So we ask you what the beginning of this universe was.”

The Prophet said: “There was God and nothing else before Him and His Throne was over the water, and He then created the Heavens and the Earth and wrote everything in the Book.”

Then a man came to me and said, ‘O Imran! Follow your she-camel for it has run away!” So I set out seeking it, and behold, it was beyond the mirage! By God, I wished that it (my she-camel) had gone but that I had not left (the gathering).”  [Sahih Al-Bukhari Book #93, Hadith #514]

It is interesting to note that knowledge of the expansion of the universe is a recent discovery. It was once proposed that “The Big Bang” was the explosion of an infinitely small and infinitely dense core of all existing matter with the particles expanding into emptiness at an infinitely quick pace.

The universe was thought to be expanding in a linear way radiating out in all directions from a central point. It is not; rather it is expanding in all directions; each object is moving away from every other object.

This means that every single point in the universe appears to be at the center. The universe is getting larger. So the Big Bang cannot be the definitive explanation of the origins of the universe.

It also fails to answer the key question, where did the original core of matter come from, and what force caused it to explode.

There are many verses in the Quran that refer to the universe, God’s creation, and the many wonders found within them and within our own bodies and selves. We accept them not as full answers to all of our questions, but as solid foundations for further study.

“All Praise is due to God, who has created the heavens and the earth, and brought into being deep darkness as well as light: and yet, those who are bent on denying the truth regard other powers as their Lord’s equals!” [Quran (Al-An’aam) 6:1]

For the Quran, or any book for that matter, to answer all of our questions about life and our existence, it would need to be a very large book indeed. It would be so large that it would be impossible to find what we are looking for.

From God’s Mercy, He has made the Quran short and manageable. It’s message is very simple, “There is only one God, worship only Him”. But at the same time the Quran is incredibly profound. It is not possible for our limited intellects to grasp the expanse of the so-called “known universe”.

“The parable of the life of this world is but that of rain which We send down from the sky, and which is absorbed by the plants of the earth whereof men and animals draw nourishment, until -when the earth has assumed its artful adornment and has been embellished, and they who dwell on it believe that they have gained mastery over it – there comes down upon it Our Judgment, by night or by day, and We cause it to become [like] a field mown down, as if there had been no yesterday. Thus clearly do We spell out these messages unto people who think!”  [Quran (Yunus) 10:24]

There is even suggestion that life exists elsewhere in the universe, not just on Earth:

“And among His signs is the [very] creation of the heavens and the earth, and of all the living creatures which He has caused to multiply throughout them: and [since He has created them,] He has [also] the power to gather them [unto Himself] whenever He wills.” [Quran (Ash-Shura) 42:29]

We know very little about the universe, how large it is, how old it is, what life exists in it…we also know very little about our own bodies and selves. But the Mercy of God is not in explaining everything to us that we wonder about, but in giving us solid foundations to build our knowledge and faith upon.Mathematical Proof that the Universe Was Formed Spontaneously

Whatever the exact process was that resulted in our existence today, all of the tiniest particles that make up all of us and everything in the universe had to come from somewhere. The laws that govern their behavior likewise came from somewhere; the laws did not create themselves.

I hope this helps answer your question.
