Working as a Controller in a Taxi Company: Allowed?

25 December, 2018
Q As-salamu alaykum. What is the ruling on working as a controller in a taxi company? I accept phone calls from the customers who are booking a taxi, then gather the jobs that are booked for that day and hand them out to drivers and then keep an eye on the drivers to make sure the customer gets to their destination on time which might mean taking the job of one driver and giving it to another driver if the first driver was going to be late. The problem is that sometimes the driver is male or the customer is female so they end up alone together in the taxi the customer and driver of apposite genders, and I know the details about the job before I give it to the driver so I know how many passengers and I can tell the genders by the driver and the passengers names. Is it counted as assisting in sin and what is the ruling on the salary resulting from this.

Answer

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

Your work as a controller in a taxi company is permissible and the salary earned from it is lawful.

Answering your question, The Fatwa Center at Islamweb, states:

Your work as a controller in a taxi company is permissible and the salary earned from it is lawful, as long as your work is to receive phone calls to book taxis, and monitor drivers to make sure that clients arrive at their destination on time, and so on.

The Islamic violations and prohibitions that may be committed by the customers and the ill-behavior of the drivers have nothing to do with the origin of the job (i.e., do not affect its permissibility), and the sin falls upon the one committing it.

Almighty Allah knows best.
