COPENHAGEN – A Muslim woman wearing a niqab has become the first person in Denmark to be fined under new laws banning full-face Islamic veils.

The woman, 28, was fined by the police who were called to a shopping center in Horsholm, north of Copenhagen, where the woman had become involved in an altercation with another woman who tried to remove her niqab, USA Today reported.

“During the fight, her niqab came off, but by the time we arrived she had put it back on again,” police duty officer David Borchersen told the Ritzau news agency.

Police are going through surveillance video to determine if the other woman deliberately ripped off the niqab.

Arriving at the shopping center, police forces asked the Muslim woman either to remove her niqab or to leave. She chose to leave.

Police officers also told her that she will receive a fine of 1,000 kroner, about $156, in the mail.

Denmark introduced a law on August 1 where people wearing a burqa, which covers a person’s entire face, or a niqab, which only shows the eyes, while in public carries a fine of 1,000 kroner.

Repeated offenders could be fined as much as 10,000 kroner (£1,193).

Human rights campaigners have slammed the ban as a violation of women’s rights, while supporters argue it enables better integration of Muslim immigrants into Danish society.
