US Muslims Mourn Slain Police Hero

BALTIMORE, MD – American Muslims mourned on Friday the death of a Muslim police officer who was killed when he was aiding a woman in a domestic incident.

“We offer sincere condolences to the loved ones of Cpl. Mujahid A. Ramazziddin, a noble, courageous officer whose final deed embodies the meaning of his name, which means to struggle or strive in the right path,” Zainab Chaudry, the Maryland Representative of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), said in a statement sent to AboutIslam.

“His sacrifice, service, and legacy of protecting those in need will not be forgotten. Indeed, to God, we belong, and to Him is our return.”

Police say Cpl. Ramzziddin was shot and killed while attempting to protect a neighbor at her request. He was home on his day off when she pleaded for his help at 10:18 a.m. Wednesday.

“He immediately responded to that plea for help and shortly thereafter found himself in a confrontation with a man armed with a shotgun,” Chief Hank Stawinski said.

“He lived a consequential life and he suffered a consequential death, but he saved her life by sacrificing his own.”

Cpl. Ramazziddin was a former American Muslim Marine and 14-year-veteran of the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Special Operations Division.

The county’s Police Chief Henry Stawinski said Cpl. Ramazziddin was “selfless” throughout his career, describing him as “a devout Muslim who helped many other Muslim officers.”

He earned the Medal of Valor in 2006, and those close to him say he often volunteered his time to serve the less fortunate.

The funeral prayer was held Friday, February 23, 2018, at the Diyanet Center of America in Lanham, Maryland.
