US Muslim Shopper’s Harassment Condemned

VIRGINIA – A Facebook video showing an American woman’s racist attack targeting a Muslim shopper has stirred angry reactions, as the number of harassment complaints targeting Muslims in the US doubled to 10 folds, compared to last year.

“All of the sudden millions of people have a window to look at what Muslim women have to go through, just for being Muslim, and being dressed according to Islamic tradition,” said Nihad Awad, with the Council on American Islamic Relations, or CAIR, KGW.com reported on Sunday, May 7.

Shared by Facebook user Jeremy McLellan Comedy, the video was filmed at a Trader Joe’s in Reston, Virginia, on Saturday.

“I wish they didn’t let you in the country,” the woman said.

The other shopper, who McLellan said is Muslim, said, “Excuse me?” and told the woman she was born in the United States.

The woman replied, “Oh, were you?”

The victim had allowed the woman to go in front of her because she looked like she was in a hurry.

The attacker had made comments about another Muslim woman’s niqab, before turning to the woman now behind her in the queue and asking why she wasn’t fully covered.

When the Muslim woman told her that she was born in the US, the shopper randomly started ranting about former president Barack Obama.

“Obama’s not in office anymore,” she said. “We don’t have a Muslim here anymore. He might end up in jail sometime in the future.”

Still filming, the Muslim woman told her that she may “need to get some help”.

The incident shed light on increasing number of anti-Muslim attacks which Awad estimated as being 10 times higher now, in light of the number of harassment complaints, compared to last year, more than 1,500 complaints since January.

“Many bigoted people felt empowered by what Donald Trump has done,” Awad said.

“It is very unfortunate. It is unconstitutional.”
