11 August, 2019
Q Dear scholars, as-salamu `alaykum. What is the best time to slaughter the sacrificial animal for Udhiyah?

Answer

Wa `alaykum as-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

The sacrificial animal should be done on the Day of Nahr, 10th of Dhul-Hijjah, or during the following days of Tashreeq, which are 11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhul-Hijjah.

Regarding your question, we would like to quote Sheikh Sayyed Sabiq stating in his well-known book Fiqh As-Sunnah,

Scholars have different views about the time of slaughtering. According to Ash-Shafi`i, it should be done on the Day of Nahr, 10th of Dhul-Hijjah, or during the following days of Tashreeq, which are 11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhul-Hijjah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “All the days of Tashreeq are days for slaughtering.” (Ahmad)

If one misses slaughtering during these days, then the sacrificial animal may be slaughtered at a later time to make up for it.

Malik and Ahmad hold the opinion that regardless of whether the slaughtering of the animal is obligatory or a supererogatory act of worship, it must be done during the appointed days.

The Hanafi school also holds the same view concerning a pilgrim who performs Hajj Tamattu or Hajj Qiran. Such a pilgrim must slaughter the animal during the appointed days of Tashreeq.

Allah Almighty knows best.
