CAIRO – A shocking video has emerged of a hijabi Muslim woman being run down by a car during a far-right protest in the Brussels district of Molenbee, where Muslims make up two in five of the district’s residents.
Video footage of the incident showed a white Audi A1 driving head-on into the woman as she crossed the road, Daily Mail reported on Sunday, April 3.
As the woman was thrown off the car’s bonnet and skidded along the road, the driver continued moving forward and appeared to run over her legs.
The passenger even appears to lean out of the window to take a photo after breaking through the police barricade.
The seriously injured woman, who was conscious, was taken to the hospital after receiving initial treatment at the scene of the attack.
Neither the identity of the attackers, nor that of the victim were released by police.
The attack comes amid escalating tension in Brussels after recent attacks in which more than 30 people were killed.
Earlier this week, Muslim women participating in a peace vigil to pay tributes to victims of Brussels attack were deliberately targeted and intimidated by far-right protesters who were making Nazi salutes.
The group was suddenly surrounded by a group of 400 far-right protesters who singled out the Muslim women confronting and intimidating them.
Belgian Muslims are estimated at 450,000 – out of a 10-million-population – about half of them are from Moroccan origin, while 120,000 are from Turkish origin.
More than 20 percent of the population of Brussels is of Muslim origin coming from Morocco, Turkey, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other African countries.
