Greetings everyone. I hope this finds you well in safety and in peace. With the Coronavirus traveling at light speed it seems I think everyone is aware that these are really difficult times. I hope you’re quarantining yourself. I hope you’re staying safe and you know God willing we’ll get through all of this soon.
I wanted to take a moment and share with you some recent social media activity that I’ve produced. One was a tweet that discussed Prophet Muhammad’s approach to quarantining and then the other is a Newsweek article .
So, I wanted to read a couple passages from the Newsweek article and hope that the content of this article might be informative and also reassuring.
So, we know that over thirteen hundred years ago, Prophet Muhammad, was actually encouraging people to quarantine and in addition to quarantining, staying hygienic taking care of oneself being clean as an individual but also being clean in terms of organizing a community and society.
While Muhammad was by no means a traditional expert on the matter of deadly diseases, he nonetheless provided sound advice in dealing with something like COVID-19.
Muhammad said, and this is a direct quote:
If you hear that there is a plague in a land, do not enter it; and if it (plague) visits a land while you are there, do not leave it.
He also said those with contagious diseases should be kept away from those who are healthy. Prophet Muhammad also strongly encouraged human beings to adhere to hygienic practices that would keep people safe from infection.
Consider the following hadiths or sayings of Prophet Muhammad:
“Cleanliness is part of faith.”
“Wash your hands after you wake up; you do not know where your hands have moved while you sleep.”
“The blessings of food lie in washing hands before and after eating.”
Now the heart of my Newsweek article focused on a story that was related in the 9th century by Persian scholar Al – Tirmidhi:
The story goes like this:
One day, Prophet Muhammad noticed a Bedouin man leaving his camel without tying it. He asked the Bedouin,
“Why don’t you tie down your camel?” The Bedouin answered, “I put my trust in God.” The Prophet then said, “Tie your camel first, then put your trust in God.”
So what was he encouraging here? He was encouraging people to you know see guidance in God or in religion in general but he also hoped that people would take basic precautionary measures for the stability, safety and well-being of all.
Tie your camel first then put your trust in God. So in light of COVID-19 and the coronavirus take the precautionary measures; be safe, quarantine yourself, wash your hands, handle the basics and then embrace your God. Pray to your God in the hope that he will take care of you.
