Racial Inequality; 4 Ways We Can Help Fight Against Racism

We all sat in horror watching a police man kneel on George Floyd’s neck for over 8 minutes, while he was pleading for his life. Many of us take for granted going about our daily business, living life, going for a jog, going for a coffee without worrying about being stopped. However, this is not the case if your skin colour is black. Racial inequality affects every aspect of our black brothers and sisters lives.

The Quran tells us clearly that we should stand firmly against injustice whether it be against ourselves, our families or relatives. There are many things we can do in order to stand with our black brothers and sisters.

1. Learn – we need to ask ourselves what are we doing to continue to educate ourselves? How are we filling in the gaps that are missing from our education?

2. Reflect – what are our own personal biases and prejudices? How can we change them?

3. Challenge racism within your circles – we are in a unique position to influence those closest to us. We might have difficult conversations but we should speak up when we see or hear racism.

4. Take actions – if we see any kind of racism happen, don’t walk away from it try and support the person on the receiving end. Volunteer for an anti-racism initiative. Hold individuals and organizations to account and ask what they are doing to eradicate systemic racism.
