The Amazing Art of Islamic Geometric Designs

Have you ever taken time to admire the elegance of Islamic geometric designs, its arabesques and calligraphy?

Truly the beauty of the designs and the endless possibilities, make geometric forms ideal for spiritual contemplation and focus during the prayer.

Following a lesson from Eric Broug (Dutch author & artist specialized in Islamic design), TED ed presented a range of Islamic designs in this very interesting video.

“In Islamic culture, geometry is everywhere. You can find it in mosques, madrasas (schools), palaces and private homes.”

During the Golden Age, science and cultural works flourished. The science of geometry became the foundation of embellishment in Islamic design.

The cyclical movement of a geometric pattern can lead to so many combinations while you only need a compass and a ruler to design it.

In fact it enables the artists to have their own signatures, yet the basis is just a circle.

“[…] everything starts with a circle. The first major decision is how will you divide it up?”

Whenever you feel like drawing, a part of the video shows you how to properly design an Islamic pattern with a simple tutorial.
