As long as the Muslim woman observes Islamic code of dress and etiquettes of dealing with non-mahram men, she may buy from, sell to and bargain with them.

Assalamu Alykum, I have two questions 1. The hadith, not to cut nails and trim hairs in the first days of Dhul Hijjah, is for the Hujjahs or for all Muslims who'll perform sacrifice. 2. Is it permissible for a wife to pay for herself and her husband's hajj expenses, because he does not have enough funds to pay for either one. JAK

Wa alaykum assalam warahmatullah wabarakatuh.

For the first question, Umm Salamah reported that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “He who has a sacrificial animal shall not get his hair cut or nails trimmed, after the commencement of Dhul-Hijjah, until he slaughters his sacrificial animal.” [Muslim]

A group of scholars quote this hadith for the prohibition or at least the undesirability of removing hair or nails after the commencement of Dhul-Hijjah as long as one has intended to slaughter a sacrificial animal.

There are other scholars, however, who raised objection in this regard maintaining that such prohibition is only for the pilgrims who assumed the state of ihram (ritual sanctity). They argue that the one who intends to offer a sacrificial animal in the tenth of Dhul-Hijjah does not have to abstain from sexual intercourse whereas a pilgrim in the state of ihram has to, which means that they are not alike. They also claim that the aforementioned hadith is not a prophetic statement but only a statement by Umm Salamah. The issue thus is controversial and there are arguments and counterarguments provided by each group of scholar.

For the second questions, of course, a wife can pay for her husband’s hajj expenses and she will be rewarded for such a good deed.

Is it haram to masturbate while watchibg porn if your addicted?

In the Name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Mercy-Giving.

Watching porno movies is strictly prohibited and indeed a grave sin. Almighty Allah says what means “Say [also] to the believing men, [O Prophet,] that they should lower their gaze [from women that are forbidden to them] and safeguard [the chastity of] their secret parts. That is most pure for them. Indeed, Allah is all-aware of all that they do.” (An-Nur 24:30)

This practice has detrimental psychological effects and seriously affects one’s religiosity.

Masturbation is prohibited as well inferred from the Quranic verse “the ones, moreover, who are ever vigilant as to [the chastity of] their secret parts- except [in associating] with their wives, or [with] whomever their hands may rightfully possess, for, then, they are not blameworthy; but whoever seeks [ a way]  beyond this, then it is they who are the transgressors.” (Al-Mu’minun 23:5-7)

You need to repent sincerely to Allah and have strong resolve not to do this again. Part of this repentance is to quit all the practices that stimulate your desire, such as gazing at members of the opposite sex, watching explicit contents, etc. You need also to keep your time busy with useful activities, because leisure time is a big opportunity for the Satan to incite you for evil acts.

Attend congregational prayers, find religious friends, stay away from the internet as far as possible, try to memorize the Quran, practice fasting to break this appetite, try to serve your community through philanthropic activities, etc.

These are just example of things that fill your time and keep you away from thinking about our appetite.

Allah (exalted is He) said, “As to those who do not find  [means] for marriage, let them keep themselves [pure and] chaste, until God enriches them from His bounty.” (An-Nur 24:33)

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever among you can afford to get married, let him do so, and whoever cannot afford it let him observe fasting, for it will be a restraint for him.”

Pray to Allah to keep you chaste and to grant you a religious spouse.

I am 31 years old. I want to wear Hijab and cover my head whenever I am out or at work. But I am unable to do so because I am suffering with Urticaria and my skin gets too many red rashes and it begins to itch a lot and skin bumps are formed on the body. I wear loose cotton clothing all the time so to avoid much skin contact with cloth as I start to feel very very uncomfortable. Is it Ok If I don't wear the Hijab till the time my Urticaria is not cured. I am very frustrated because of this. Please pray for my cure and suggest me what to do. AS whenever I wear HIjab my discomfort increases a lot and makes it more uncomfortable at work place as I am always scratching my skin because of the itching. Thanking you in advance for taking your time and effort in responding to me. May Allah bless you all. Allah Hafiz.

May Allah grant you quick recovery from this illness and keep you steadfast on His religion.

The case as you described does not sound like a case of necessity. You just “feel uncomfortable at work”. So, I would suggest you take a leave till you get cured.

Pray to Allah to help you overcome this difficulty. Show Him your humility and need for His support to abide by the teachings of His religion. Allah never lets down His sincere servants.

For women who have reached the menopause age, the waiting period (iddah) after divorce shall be three lunar months starting after the pronouncement of divorce. Almighty Allah says in the Quran what means “As to those of your women who anticipate no further menstruation- if you are uncertain [as to their term]- then their waiting period  shall be three months, [just] as it shall be for those, who have not [yet] menstruated.” (Quran 65:4)

As-salaamu alaikum RB dear scholar, I have an upcoming child inshaAllah and I want to know how to give him his middle name. We picked isa as his first name. I heard that his name should be Isa Ibn Muhammed Fareed or isa ibn razi fareed or at least isa muhammed fareed or isa razi fareed, as my name is razi muhammed fareed. Please let me know if this is how the islamic naming system is for middle names. I prefer the name Isa ibn muhammed fareed. Also, I have a daughter named Maryam afiya fareed and i was thinking of changing it to maryam bint muhammed fareed. Jazakullaha khair

I do not know about the naming system in your country. But usually the child’s name comes first, the father’s name comes second, and the surname comes last. Using the word “ibn” or “bint” depends on the naming system in your country.

is it permitted for parents to curse daughters & sons ? Is it permitted for parents to do bad dua for daughters & sons?

In the Name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Mercy-Giving.

A good Muslim should watch for his tongue. Slandering and cursing others are prohibited. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “The [true] believer is not given to slandering or cursing [others], nor is he immoral or foul-mouthed.” (At-Tirmidhi)

It is a big mistake made by many parents that they curse their children and invoke Allah against them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) warned against this practice saying, “Do not invoke curse on yourselves, do not invoke curse on your children, do not invoke curse on your servants, and do not invoke curse on your property, lest you happen to do it at a time when Allah is asked for something and answers your request.” (Muslim)

Assalamu alaikum wa Rahmatullah. May Allah's peace and blessings be upon you. Please what is the Islamic ruling on aborting pregnancy of 1 or 2 months on the ground of child spacing? Thank you

Wa alaykum assalam warahmatullah wabarakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Mercy-Giving.

All praise is due to Allah. Peace and blessings be upon His Messenger Muhammad.

Basically, it is not permissible to abort pregnancy at any stage unless for a legitimate reason and within very restricted limits. If the pregnancy is in the first stage, which is within a period of 40 days, and abortion will ward off an expected harm, then it is permissible. Thus, abortion at this stage for fear of being unable to raise children or to bear the costs of their education, or because the couple feel that they have enough children is not permissible.

During the second and third periods (40 days each), it is not permissible to abort pregnancy unless a trustworthy medical committee has decided that such pregnancy poses a real threat to the mother’s health or life. In this case, it is permissible to abort it once all means to ward off that danger have been exhausted.

After the third stage — that is, after the elapse of four months — it is not permissible to abort pregnancy unless a group of trustworthy medical specialists decide that keeping the fetus in his mother’s womb will endanger her life. That should only be done after all means to keep the fetus alive have been exhausted.

Obviously, child-spacing is not a legitimate reason to justify abortion, even in the first stage.

Assalamu alaikum. About a month ago I told some Christian friends I would be timekeeper at Vacation Bible School at their church. All I would be doing is going around to different stations and letting them know when it’s time for the next activity. Now I’m scared it’s a sin to do this and I want to tell them I can’t go because I don’t want to anger Allah. Would it actually be a sin to do this? It would be for five days in a row.

The activities held by these schools are parts of the church programs to attract children and educate them with Christian teachings. A Muslim thus may not participate in any activity that propagates the teachings of other religions or attract people to them.
